Objectives for Preceptorship Experience

 

The purpose of this clinical experience is to assist the student into the transition of the role of the RN in managing and caring for groups of patients under the supervision of an instructor and RN preceptor.

 

In an emergency situation, the student will assume the role of the observer, unless otherwise directed, but within the scope of knowledge and practice of the individual student.

 

Upon completion of the Preceptorship clinical experience, the student will be able to:

 

  • Identify the role of the RN in coordinating the care of groups of patients

 

  • Compare and contrast the roles and responsibilities of an RN caring for groups of patients on different shifts.

 

  • Administer nursing care to a variety of acute, subacute, and chronic patients according to the nursing process. The student should be able to make revisions with the care provided while utilizing the nursing process.

 

  • Administer medications and utilize knowledge of the medications’ to implement appropriate nursing implications with their use.

 

  • Assist in the use of therapeutic and diagnostic equipment used in the care of patients.

 

  • When possible, observe and assist with unit protocols and selected procedures with supervision.

 

  • Demonstrate behavior reflective of cultural sensitivity and respect for ethnic and cultural beliefs regarding health, illness and the health care system.

 

  • Act as an advocate for patients and/or families to promote and /or maintain health.

 

  • Document nursing care according to the nursing process, in a concise and timely manner.

 

  • Determine learning needs of patients and families.

 

  • Implement appropriate teaching to patients/families based on the nursing process.

 

  • When possible, make appropriate referrals to health care agencies as needed by patients/families.

 

  • Discuss legal and ethical responsibilities as they relate to caring for groups of patients in a variety of situations.

 

  • Illustrate appropriate communication techniques for patients/families, recognizing stressors and possible consequences and providing anticipatory guidance as needed.

 

  • Distinguish between independent, dependent, and interdependent nursing care.

 

  • Collaborate with members of the health care team and to make referrals as needed.

 

  • Utilize principles of organization and time management when providing care for clients/families in various situations.

 

  • Utilize prioritization when providing care for groups of clients.

 

  • Implement the practice of delegation with the coordination of nursing care for groups of patients.

 

  • Demonstrate critical thinking, problem-solving abilities and to use scientific and nursing knowledge in making clinical decisions.
