Grateful Student Story: Lauren Wilson

When Lauren began her nursing journey at Aultman College, she wasn’t just starting a new academic chapter, she was rebuilding her faith in herself and the medical field.

Before nursing school, Lauren had spent years in a job where she felt undervalued and emotionally depleted. She stayed because she loved the patients and the people she worked with, but over time, the environment eroded her confidence. “I was a heartbroken shell of the person I used to be,” she shared. But what she didn’t realize then was that the struggles she faced were preparing her for something greater.

At Aultman College, Lauren found more than a classroom. She found purpose, healing and a community that would forever change her life.

One of the most powerful parts of Lauren’s journey was the deep bond she formed with her nursing cohort. As one of the older students in her class, she had worried about fitting in. But those fears quickly faded. “I never imagined my classmates would actually want to be friends with the ‘mom’ in the group,” she joked. But what they formed went far beyond friendship; they became a family. Together, they weathered the long nights, the stress, the tears and the victories. They supported one another through every stage of the program, and Lauren credits much of her success to that unwavering support system.

Her academic experience was equally shaped by the staff and faculty members who guided her along the way. She speaks with deep gratitude about Monica Mendenhall, campus coordinator, and Jenn Bradley, who worked in student services. Lauren credits both with consistently advocating for students and working to make the experience enjoyable and rewarding. She describes Kristie Rohm, associate professor of nursing, as “a beautiful soul” who brought warmth and compassion into every lesson. Lauren also holds a special place in her heart for Colleen Wiley, assistant professor of nursing, whom she lovingly refers to as the “mother of the cohort.” She said that Professor Wiley was there from the very beginning, guiding Lauren and her classmates through the challenges of nursing school with steady support and genuine care.

Behind every determined student is a strong support system, and for Lauren, that system started at home. Her husband, Clint, and daughters, Parker and Spencer, were with her through every step. “I know my journey through nursing school wasn’t easy. My husband and girls had to sacrifice a lot, but gave me constant love and support for me to achieve this dream.” Lauren also shared special thanks to her mother-in-law, Judy, who cared for her daughters during clinicals and late nights of study, always ensuring they had what they needed.

Graduating from Aultman College was more than just earning a degree, it was proof that transformation is possible. Lauren had arrived unsure and broken, but she gave her graduation speech filled with confidence, purpose and gratitude.

Now, as she begins her nursing career at Aultman Hospital, Lauren hopes to carry forward the lessons that shaped her lessons in resilience, compassion and the power of community. And if she could offer any advice to those just starting their journey, it would be: “Don’t let the world harden you. Stay compassionate. Know your worth. And never forget why you chose to become a nurse.”

For Lauren, Aultman College wasn’t just a school; it was the place where she found her strength again.
